What ARE They?

These are the motor­ized box­ers con­trolled by two dri­vers who bat­tle to deliver chin-lifting upper­cuts for vic­tory. Sim­i­lar to bumper cars, a dri­ver up to 300 lbs. sits inside the robot’s pro­tec­tive steel cage cock­pit and uses a thumb-triggered but­ton on two inde­pen­dent joy­sticks to acti­vate two pneumatic-powered, tire-tread-fisted arms, which throw upward punches at an oppos­ing robot’s head. A suc­cess­ful hit sends an oppos­ing robot’s head back, scor­ing a point. A Honda gas engine pow­ers each robot’s hid­den wheels up to 3 mph for for­ward, back­ward, and left and right spins, required for maneu­ver­ing into posi­tion for a scor­ing punch. Each vehi­cle has a bumper that keeps spar­ring pugilists at the opti­mal dis­tance for scor­ing. A front-mounted dis­play in each robot’s mid-section tal­lies suc­cess­ful scor­ing punches. Its fuel capac­ity pro­vides up to five hours of unin­ter­rupted bouts; a built-in recharge­able 12-volt bat­tery pro­vides power for the elec­tron­ics. Con­tests take place on smooth sur­faces as small as 16′ sq. Sturdy steel frame with fiber­glass and alu­minum body panels.

Pro­cured from the Lucas­film Archives, these are the blue­prints that were used to design the iconic space­crafts, droids, and sets from the Stars Wars saga. Two hun­dred and fifty of the orig­i­nal blue­prints, includ­ing those of the Mil­len­nium Fal­con, C3-PO, and R2-D2, were pho­tographed and pub­lished for the first time on the pages of this book. Each tech­ni­cal draw­ing pro­vides insight into the gen­e­sis of the space­ships, humanoids, and galac­tic locales from the six-film Star Wars film series, detail­ing their evo­lu­tion from con­cept, through pro­duc­tion, and onto film. Over 500 pho­tographs and illus­tra­tions of con­cept designs, pro­duc­tion mod­els, and film stills, along with inter­views of the films’ orig­i­nal pro­duc­tion design­ers, art direc­tors, and drafts­men, accom­pany the blueprints.

The Room Tidy­ing Pickup Robot — Roboscooper.

This is the robot that picks up objects at their com­mand and loads them onto its cargo bed, emp­ty­ing con­tents at their pre­ferred loca­tion. The remote dri­ves the robot left, right, for­ward, and backward–with skid­ding sounds for stops and beeps when in reverse–allowing them to nudge it into place for pick­ing up small, 1 oz. items such as balls, toys, or socks with its two artic­u­lated arms and hands. It can also oper­ate autonomously using its four infrared “eyes” that seek and detect objects within its 8 — 12″ sight range while it announces “Let’s get to work!” Once an object is secured, the robot’s torso piv­ots to deposit an object into its cargo bay; it dumps con­tents by vibrat­ing to dis­lodge objects from the bay, adding “one step closer to a cleaner world.” Com­pletely aware of its envi­ron­ment, it informs them when an object is either too large or fixed with “too heavy for me” and “uh… a lit­tle help, please” if it gets stuck. It can also issue beefy, two-handed slaps to objects when set into “whack” mode, urg­ing you to “let ‘er rip!” when ready.
