Talk to the Hand – It’s For You

By Jan Carroll

Twenty years ago when someone was walking down the street talking to themselves, it would cause apprehension as it could be a sign this person was ‘off’ a bit and perhaps should be avoided. Now, we don’t think twice about someone walking chortling merrily along having a conversation with an invisible person. With the proliferation of ear-buds, and blue tooth headsets on mobile phones, conversations can occur easily with no phone device in obvious evidence.

And who hasn’t seen someone on the street, on TV or in a movie use the “Universal” gesture for “let’s connect by phone” or “call me” or “talk soon”… You know the one… It’s kind of like the Vulcan “Live Long and Prosper” hand gesture from Star Trek.

Well now, thanks to the wonders of modern technology, they may actually be talking on the phone, not just talking to themselves! You’ll probably see lots of different hand movements,.

A Gift That Will Bring Out The Playful Kid In Him

By Jan Carroll

I’ve been very busy searching for the best gifts to put up on our site. Billy offered to take a little time off his projects to give me a hand. Well he tries to help but mostly he gets lost looking at cool stuff he wants. Which is okay because he sends me ideas for men’s pages.

Sphero 2.0

Sphero 2.0

He was looking through our site to check out gifts I’ve put up recently. I noticed him looking at the ‘Sphero 2.0’ on our ‘Electronic Gifts’ page with a slightly puzzled frowny face. “What is this thing for?” I suggested he go ahead, click on the link and watch the video… A few moments later I looked over at him again and his eyes were wide and lit up like a little kid in a toy store. “This is too cool!” he exclaimed. “I want one… No I want one for me and buddies too! We could take them out for walks together or runs! We could organize soccer type games pushing a smaller ball around with the big ball!! The possibilities are endless!!”

You really must view the video to get the potential because it doesn’t look like much… well it looks like a ball! Which it is but so much more with a remote control and 25 built in apps. You can play alone or with a group of friends. Even with your pet. It glows in the dark and goes in water. As Billy says the possibilities are endless. Guys can use them at the beach to send corny pick up lines to girls (or visa versa 😉 I will spare you some of the other, shall we say,  ‘overly creative’ ideas Billy offered. Yes, let you imagination run wild.

I don’t often see this side of him. He has a good sense of humor, but to see this great big mature guy bubbling over with almost a childlike sense of fun and enthusiasm was really a bit of something wonderful. I think that’s what we all hope to achieve when we are finding gifts.

The ‘Sphero 2.0’ comes with an enthusiastic 2 thumbs up from Billy, and I bet your kids, big and little will love it too!

Check out the Sphero 2.0

Give a cool electronic gift like this for the man in your life who has everything.

‘Gift Guide’ For Someone Who Has Everything – Anniversary Gifts

By Jan Carroll

Here is my ‘Gift Guide’ for an Anniversary present for someone who has everything.

You 'Gift Guide' for Unique Anniversary Gifts For Someone Who Has EverythingMost of us start thinking about an anniversary gift about a month before our wedding anniversary actually arrives.  Yes I can hear chuckles from some guys out there – you know who you are – the ones who has a calendar pop-up the day before to remind you, or the secretary that you tell to run out and buy it that day.

* Schedule a reminder on your calendar, or give your secretary a reminder, that tells you at least one month prior to your anniversary that what date it is due.

* Start the anniversary search process at least four weeks before the actual date.  This means, think back to how you felt, how excited you were a month before the wedding.  Remember all the preparations?  Well time to do this again.

So, here is a rough schedule to follow 4 weeks before the anniversary date. Bear with me men, this next section will be hard for you.

In a perfect world…

Week 4 – Put a love note with her/his coffee in the morning, or with her/his drink at night.

Week 3 – Offer to do a chore your partner is not fond of doing.  If she hates laundry then offer to do it for her and put a note on the top the clean clothes with a heart or a kiss.  If he hates mowing the lawn then offer to do that and put note with a heart or a kiss on the lawnmower when you are finished.

Week 2 – Make dinner or order dinner in.  Whoever cooks just say “not tonight, it is taken care of”.  If you normally order in then actually cook a dinner (or bring home one that you just need to heat).  Again a ‘love’ note.

Week 1 – Now this is a bit tricky.  You want to do something special on a day other than your anniversary day as well.  So if you anniversary falls on a Friday then on Monday or Tuesday, after dinner, but some nice music on and ask him/her to dance.  Ok, so you have kids and that won’t work.  Wait until they are in bed.  The music can be soft.  It doesn’t have to be a dance.  It could be just a cuddle listening to your favorite song.

Anniversary Day

Now is the time to think back to when you were married.  Remember the excitement, the thrill, the overwhelming joy.  It’s time to share that with your partner. Start the day off with a card,  Leave it by the coffer maker, on her/his pillow, in her/his car, etc. If you can, do take the time to have quiet time – maybe a dinner away.  If you don’t have time do try and at least have a drink together after the work/kids are all set.

At the last moment of the day, when you both feel the warmth and joy of all that has lead up to this great anniversary then give your partner their gift.

Back to reality…

That’s likely more than most couples can take on, so if you feel you can’t here’s a plan that is easier to fulfill.

Week 4 – Start thinking about what you would like to do for your anniversary and looking at gift ideas.

Week 3 – Same as week 4, come on let’s get this together! And make sure you are clearing your schedule so work or other potential calendar conflicts don’t arise.

Week 2 – For heaven’s sake if you don’t have the present yet, get a move on, your running out of time! If you are dining out and need to make arrangements for a baby sitter, a reservations for an exclusive restaurant, or event. And clue in everyone who needs to know and let them know their role, such as making themselves scarce, for example, if they are rambunctious teens.

Week 1 – If you haven’t gotten a gift by now, your options are less and you are close to blowing it… So get something quick… Let your partner know early in the week you are looking forward to your upcoming anniversary. The build up ahead will make everything more special.

Now you may be asking “why do I have to go through all of this, we are already married?”  That’s a legit question.  But let me ask you one, do you want to stay married?  No, an anniversary present will not make or break a marriage, but romance, or the lack there of can.

You can ignore my 4 week ahead advice and just buy an anniversary gift for the day and just hand it to your partner with a “happy anniversary”.  I’m sure it will still be fine.  But – BUT – if you want to keep excitement in your marriage, if you want to keep romance in your marriage, if you want to be happy, just take a bit of time to do something extra… every single year, even every single day!

Be sure to start looking before your anniversary month starts.  You don’t have to buy it at that time, but it will give you lots of leeway to find the perfect present.

Check out our anniversary page here for some  ideas Here!

Taking the time to make your anniversary day special, as well as giving an anniversary gift, will be an incredibly memorable day!

A Unique Wine Gift Is Liquid Gold

By Jan Carroll

My cousin was a wine collector. Each month he would receive a box of wine, not just wine but rare wine. When I was lucky enough to be invited to dinner he would share one of these bottles of wine. Now I have to say I am a wine lover, and can tell a good wine from a bad one, but every bottle I shared with him was better than any wine I had ever tasted. It’s the kind of wine that you sip, you savor.

Good wine truly is like liquid gold.

I can hear glasses tinkling toasting their agreement from all the wine lovers out there.

You really can’t go wrong giving a great wine gift to someone who has everything, or someone who is hard to buy for. Wine is treasured almost universally and even revered by some to an almost spiritual level.  They will thank you when they open the present. And again, when they open the bottle, enjoy it and share it, they will think of your thoughtful present. Who knows, maybe you’ll be there and be able to share the moment as they share the wine with you like my cousin did.

But did you know that there are more options than just buying a bottle of wine?

You can give the gift of a wine club that will deliver great local wines, national wines, and international wines delivered monthly, or wine baskets, or wine adventure, oh so many more.

Have a look here.

A unique wine gift is liquid gold. Let’s toast to good wine and good friends!

What Can You Give Someone Who Has Everything When You Are On A Limited Budget

By Jan Carroll

It’s not easy finding a gift for someone who seems to have it all.

The other day I received an email saying that her extended family were well off, while her family was not. Her question was, what can she buy in that instance.

Find a unique gift for someone who has it all in any price range

This question started me thinking.

I remember when I was a young teen and my Mum took me out shopping. Not for me, it was really for her, but I loved going along with her. She took me to such great places and I saw so many wonderful items I just loved.

I remember her telling me to pick something out I liked. Each and every time I found something it was in the highest price range. Way out of her price range.

She would I say I had ‘champagne taste on a beer budget” with a sad look on her face.

So I would go find something else to show her that was way less that I still loved. I wanted her to feel good as much as I did.

I think she was teaching me a lesson, which was it’s not so much what you spend as it is the thought that goes into to why you buy, whether for yourself, or for a present.

Years later I started thinking about what I did when I was looking for for family and friends who have it all when I was on a beer budget.  Which took me back to why I created this site in the first place.

So if you are on a limited budget I would suggest looking in at least these two areas.

1.  Artisan. These cover all age groups and interests.  Here you can find clothing, home furniture and decor, artisan jewelry and so much more.

Check it out here

2. Unusual.  These cover so many different age groups, interest, plus something unusual they likely do not have. You can find fun,  gadgets, specialty items, and more unusual & fun presents.

Check it out here

These are all in various price ranges to fit any budget.

But, you will also find that I offer, on this site, many different items that go from less than $10 to over $10,000.  It’s all about finding something that makes your someone special happy.  Whether it’s a interactive pet for a young child, or an ultimate diamond ring for her, I have made sure I have covered all the bases for everyone, and every budget level.

Unique Sports Gifts Picked By A Closet Sports Nut!

By Jan Carroll

Most everyone has a sports fan they need to find a great present for. Although I wouldn’t say I am big in sports, or a big sports fan, I do have to admit that when it comes to watching sports, especially hockey…

I am the picture of the “out of control sports fanatic”.

Unique Sports Gifts

You see I grew up with sports.  My Dad (George Retzlaffl) was an executive sports producer for CBC Television.  He produced football, golf (oh so many sports including several Olympics) and started ‘Hockey Night In Canada’. In fact, he invented the ‘Instant Replay’.

So as much as I say I am not a sports nut, I really am.

As usual at our site we’ve managed to find items that have something special about them and are out of the ordinary. We showcase items for couch quarterbacks who love sports but would rather watch and for those don’t feel like they are really alive unless they are whooshing down the steepest, fastest run of the mountain… And for those who fall in between too.

Try these selections from our Sports Page on for size…

An all terrain hoverboard anyone? Or how about an inflatable Wind Surfer and Sailboat? Do you have a golfer you need to get a gift for? We have the PDGA Approved Disc Golf.

Check out the sports page here!

Of course we can’t forget winter sports  so kit your sports fan out with a Burton Skipjack Surf Snowboard. Oh so many unique sports gifts!

We also have some great sports gift ideas on our Male Room page here!

Whether your sports fan is into golf, tennis, water skiing, kayaking, skateboards, hockey, hiking gear,  pool or other indoor sports we have them.

If your special someone needs a bit of a ‘fitness lift’ before the get active check out our fitness page here!
